East 6th Street is the stretch that runs from Congress Avenue to IH-35.  It was originally called Pecan Street and was revitalized into an entertainment district in the 70’s and 80’s. You will often hear locals call this area “the Dirty 6th.”  The crowd is usually a mix of tourists, college students and those celebrating birthday/bachelor/bachelorette parties.  Many of the bars along the stretch host live music on the weekends or DJs.  There are a number of great restaurants and shops along the stretch as well.

It should be noted that the Austin Police completely block off this portion of 6th Street during Thursday- Saturday night hours.  This is so pedestrians can roam the street a little more freely. You will have to resort to parking on nearby streets or parking garages.
